Fantastic…All the Planets Aligned. Radipole Sensory Garden April 2025

Radipole Sensory Garden

We knew it would be a big day for Radipole Park & Gardens.

Judgement day for whether we’d all done enough to achieve a Green Flag for our beautiful green space, one of the objectives of our Lottery award.

Tom, Weymouth Town Council’s resident gardener, and his colleagues, had worked so hard to reach this stage.

We’d mustered the FORPAG troops, put in our order for nice weather, it was a case of fingers and toes crossed.

Not knowing who, when, how many judges would arrive, every passerby was eyed with possible interest.

Finally a man with a clip board wandered into the sensory garden, taking great interest in the plants, pulling off a dandelion head here and there. I did gently offer that we leave the flower heads, early vital food for insects, but had missed pulling them before setting seed.

We chatted, but he revealed nothing.

Was he incognito?

Were we supposed to pretend to not think he may be the judge?

Then suddenly a real curve ball turned up, multiple cars arrived, disgorging folk dripping with mayoral chains, led by Weymouth’s Mayor Jon Orrell.

Were they the judges?

Now we were completely flummoxed.

FORPAG’s Chair Mel Corbould took charge and gave them a very enthusiastic talk about the sensory garden and the Lottery Project’s aims and ethos.

After a mooch round, a few questions answered, off they trundled to their next destination.

Turned out it was pure coincidence they coming along just as we were being judged by…yes, the man with the clip board.

So now we wait, would Radipole park & gardens received that prestigious award for the first time in her life?

Be recognised for the beautiful green space she is.

Would our Cinderella park be wearing her ballgown for all to see.

Follow us to find out.
