Torre Abbey Gardens in Torquay.

The monastery of Torre Abbey was established In 1196.
It is a mini ‘Kew’ of Devon, boasting glass house…

…and gardens within gardens.
The Walled Garden is famed for its exuberant plantings of herbaceous perennials, roses and dahlias set in a formal nineteenth century landscape around the Abbey ruins.

The Medieval Garden has been lovingly created to entice people of all ages into the fascinating world of medieval plants and their uses.

Turf seats, willow tunnels and authentic planting offer children the opportunity to explore, touch, taste and look.
The Palm House contains a large collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants , and the Arid House contains cactus plants whose flowers , though short lived, are extraordinarily colourful and fragrant .

Inspired by one of Torquay’s most famous daughters, the Potent Plants Garden (some poisonous, some a little more benign!) shows a range of beautiful but sinister plants including the sources for cyanide, morphine and ricin – to name just a few. Remember that over half of Agatha Christie’s characters were poisoned !

Then it’s on to Coleton Fishacre gardens in Torquay.

And back in time to the Jazz Age.
A 1920s country retreat complete with luxuriant garden by the sea .
Formerly the country home of the D’Oyly Carte family, this most evocative of country homes was built in the Arts & Crafts style, and is imbued with Art Deco elegance.

A light, joyful atmosphere fills the rooms, and music plays, echoing the family’s Gilbert and Sullivan connections.

In this RHS accredited garden, viewpoints give enticing glimpses out to sea, paths weave through glades…

…past tranquil ponds, and tender plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and New Zealand thrive in the moist and sheltered valley.
